An attacker gained the ball near
the half-way line and rushes toward the opponent's goal with a defender
running near him. |
 |
Because another attacker was wide
open and equally close to the goal line, the attacker with the ball went to
the side of the goal. The only defenders near him were the one already
mentioned and the goalkeeper. |
 |
The attacker faked a shot, which
drew both the defender and the goalkeeper. |
 |
Instead of shooting the ball, he
passed the ball straight to the wide open teammate who was by now clearly in
an offside position. |
 |
Before the ball arrived at the wide
open attacker, another defender ran from behind play, lunged one foot to the
ball, and accidentally redirected the ball straight into his own goal. |

 | Offside! No goal. |
 | At the moment the pass was made
by the teammate, toward the attacker in an offside position, the attacker
became involved in the play and he would have gained an advantage from being
in that position. |
 | The deflection of the ball by the
defender into his own goal is irrelevant, because the offside infraction had
occurred prior to that. |
 | The restart would be an indirect
free kick taken from the place where the infringement occurred, keeping in
mind the "Special Circumstances" listed in Law 8. |
